Wyden Seeks Input on Major Overhaul of Long-Term Care In America

Washington, D.C. - Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released a comprehensive request for information on a range of policy proposals aimed at improving long-term care for all Americans, including creating an affordable home care guarantee.

"Long-term care and the decisions that surround it are among the most personal and sensitive any American family must face," Wyden said. "Today, those decisions are too often driven by financial considerations rather than what is best for a loved one and their family. Senate Democrats are determined to deliver an equitable and affordable home care guarantee for all Americans in need, improve the quality of long-term care across the board, and make sure there are workers in good jobs to meet that need. That starts by hearing from all corners of the country on the ideas put forward in this document. I look forward to creative, robust and thorough responses that put Americans who need long-term care at the center."

The request for information seeks feedback on a range of policy proposals that create universal, simple and flexible access to long-term care for Americans in every circumstance, while investing in a strong workforce and creating safeguards that protect people and taxpayer dollars alike. Three general areas for feedback include:

  • Making home care affordable and accessible especially for Americans with disabilities and seniors.

  • Improving the quality of care in nursing homes

  • Strengthening the long-term care workforce

This year, Wyden and Senate Democrats have launched an initiative to reimagine the American health care system in light of Republicans' historic, devastating health care cuts, as well as the march of corporate greed that has increased costs while reducing the quality of care in every aspect of the health care system. This summer, Wyden released similar requests for information on prescription drug pricing and health insurance.
