At Lewiston Library, we believe in lifelong learning and meaningful connections-no matter a person's age or ability. That's why we've expanded our collection of Memory Care Kits, available for a two-week checkout. We currently offer seven unique kits:
Classic Automobiles
The Great Outdoors
In the Kitchen
On the Farm
Pets
Veterans
Each kit includes tactile, visual, and interactive materials designed to support individuals at all stages of memory loss. They offer a fun and enriching way to spark conversation, trigger memories, and foster meaningful connections. For example, our Pets kit includes two cuddly stuffed animals for sensory stimulation, coloring books with pencils, picture books, and more. Meanwhile, the In the Kitchen kit features a shopping game, kitchen tools, and several books. Caregivers might even consider adding scents like a sprig of rosemary or mint, or play background sounds that align with each themed kit, to further engage the senses and awaken memories.
These kits aren't just for individuals experiencing memory loss-they also provide activities and resources for caregivers, family members, and friends. Being a caregiver can be challenging, especially when seeing a loved one struggle with memory and health issues. Our Memory Care Kits create opportunities for shared experiences, joy, and connection. As Sally Inglett writes on the American Library Association's website: "By recalling positive experiences from the past, we can not only validate their self-worth but also help people connect using conversation and storytelling about their interests. By doing so, they may find comfort, a release from boredom, and a lift from depression and loneliness."
Our Memory Care Kits are a unique resource offered primarily through our On the Go mobile library service. If you're a caregiver or have a loved one who would benefit from these materials, give us a call at 208-798-2516. We'd love to bring a kit to our next stop in your area or have one available at any of our help desks.
Whether you're supporting a loved one, working with individuals in memory care, or looking for a meaningful intergenerational activity, we invite you to discover the power of reminiscence-one Memory Care Kit at a time. Learn more about the kits and explore additional caregiver resources on our Memory Care Kit webpage.
