WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) met with Bridgette Norring of Hastings, Minnesota, the founder of the Devin J. Norring Foundation. Her son, Devin, tragically died at the age of nineteen from fentanyl poisoning in 2020 after purchasing a pill on Snapchat he believed was Percocet to help relieve his migraines. In his honor, his family started the Devin J. Norring Foundation to raise awareness about the dangers of dealers selling fake pills and other illicit substances online.
"I met with Bridgette Norring from Hastings, who lost her son Devin to a fentanyl-laced pill bought on social media. We discussed how to improve children's online safety. For too long social media companies have turned a blind eye to drug dealers who use their platforms to sell deadly drugs like fentanyl. This is why I introduced the bipartisan Cooper Davis and Devin Norring Act, which honors Devin by cracking down on the sale of fentanyl through social media platforms by requiring these companies to report when drugs are being sold on their platforms."
Klobuchar is a leader in pushing for legislation to hold technology companies accountable for keeping kids safe online.
Senator Klobuchar is a cosponsor of the Sunset Section 230 Act, which would repeal Section 230 two years after the date of enactment so that those harmed online can bring legal action against companies and finally hold them accountable for the harms that occur on their platforms.
Senator Klobuchar is a cosponsor of the Cooper Davis and Devin Norring Act, which would require social media companies and other communication service providers to report to the DEA when they know of the sale or distribution of illicit drugs, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, or a counterfeit controlled substance on their platforms. This legislation honors the memory of Devin Norring and Cooper Davis, a 16 year-old from Kansas, and many other teenagers who were tragically killed by counterfeit drugs that were laced with fentanyl.
Senator Klobuchar is a cosponsor of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). This bipartisan legislation would require social media platforms to make safety the default and to give kids and parents tools to help prevent the destructive impact of social media. KOSA also ensures that parents and policymakers can assess whether social media platforms are taking meaningful steps to address risks to kids.
Senator Klobuchar is also a cosponsor of the Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0), bipartisan legislation to update online data privacy rules for the 21st century to ensure children and teenagers are protected online.
