Bicyclist Fatally Injured in Collision with Pickup Truck on 2nd Avenue North

The bicyclist killed Wednesday evening after being hit by a pickup truck as he rode off a sidewalk onto 2nd Avenue North near Junior Gilliam Way has been tentatively identified as a 52-year-old Nashville man. Positive identification is pending fingerprint analysis.

The investigation to this point shows that the bicyclist was traveling south along 2nd Avenue North on the sidewalk at 5:20 p.m. Simultaneously, a Ford F-350 pickup truck was traveling south nearly parallel with the bicycle. The 26-year-old driver of the pickup truck said he saw the bike on the sidewalk to his left when it suddenly came off the sidewalk and attempted to cross the street. The Ford driver said he did not have enough time to react and struck the bike. The rider was rushed to Vanderbilt where he died.

There was no evidence of impairment on the part of the pickup truck driver. The preliminary cause of this collision appears to be the bicyclist's failure to yield to the moving pickup truck.
