Chickamauga, GA (March 23, 2026) In celebration of the first full week of spring, the Walker County Landfill will host "Strawapalooza" this Tuesday and Wednesday, March 24 & 25. There won't be any musical acts performing, but there will be a lot of straw to give away.
"We have about 250 square bales of straw that need to find a new home," said Paine Gily, director of solid waste and environmental management. "The straw is left over from our slope stabilization project. Due to the loss of available storage, the material cannot be preserved long-term without deteriorating. This event allows the material to be utilized productively within the community rather than discarded, while also resolving the immediate storage constraint."
Those visiting the landfill for "Strawapalooza" should first drop by the scalehouse and inform the operator they would like to pick up some straw. The operator will then direct them to a storage trailer to collect the freebie. There is a limit of five bales of straw per vehicle per day.
Straw has several uses in the spring, especially among gardeners. It can be spread over newly sowed grass, used as mulch, added to compost and provide dry bedding for animals.
Straw is available on a first come, first served basis. The Walker County Landfill is located at 5120 N Marble Top Road near Chickamauga and will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during this event.
