LMU Loyola Law School has begun a full replacement of one of two elevator systems in the William M. Rains Library to restore reliable, long-term service to the building. The replacement project represents a significant capital investment in the library's infrastructure and reflects the university's ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, accessible, and dependable facilities that support academic life for one of the campus' cornerstone spaces.
A Building with History
The library's two elevators reflect different eras in the building's history. The original elevator was installed when the building was constructed in 1962; a second elevator was added in 1987 as a part of a later phase of improvements. For decades, both systems supported daily access to classrooms, study spaces, and the library's collections.
Over time, however, the systems began to show their age. The building's original elevator has been out of service for approximately three years, due to the complexity of its design and the absence of short-term repair options. During that period, the second elevator continued to provide access to the library's floors and services. The older elevator's hydraulic system runs beneath significant portions of the building's foundation, making repair unusually invasive and structurally challenging. Restoring that system would require major reconstruction - and disruption to library operations - rather than routine maintenance.
The second elevator remained operational until recently, when a system failure occurred. An evaluation by Facilities Management and the university's elevator service provider determined that key components of both elevators are now obsolete and no longer supported. Standard parts replacements are no longer viable for either aging elevator system, which have now reached the end of their typical service lifespan.
With both elevators out of service, the university conducted a comprehensive assessment of available options. A review of potential shorter term repair options of the newer elevator revealed that such options would not have addressed the long-term reliability concerns associated with aging infrastructure. After careful review, the decision was made to proceed with full replacement of the newer elevator system to provide dependable service moving forward.
The project timeline for completion is approximately 31 weeks, with service anticipated to be restored by early fall 2026, assuming procurement and scheduling proceed as planned.
Access to Library Floors
Access measures are in place to ensure continued use of library spaces and services. While the basement stacks remain accessible by stairs, elevator access to that level is temporarily unavailable. Library staff are available at the front desk to retrieve materials from the basement stacks upon request, ensuring continued access to the full collection. We have also taken steps to increase the number of study rooms that do not require basement access, with priority given to those with mobility related needs. Study rooms that do not require basement access are being prioritized for those with mobility needs.
