City of West Hollywood Reminds Community about Tips for Coyote Management and Coexistence

The City of West Hollywood has recently observed an increase in coyote sightings, resulting in more frequent encounters in streets, parks, and residential areas. Coyotes are generally reclusive animals that tend to avoid contact with humans. In urban environments, however, coyotes may learn that neighborhoods offer easy access to human-associated food sources while presenting few natural threats. As a result, coyotes may appear in yards and public spaces even when people are present, which can lead to conflicts.

To promote safety and community awareness, the City of West Hollywood's Neighborhood and Business Safety Division hosted a Coyote Management and Coexistence Virtual Meeting approximately one year ago in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Agriculture. The meeting was recorded and is now available as a WeHoTV video on the City's website. The video provides helpful information about coyote behavior and guidance on how to respond safely.

In 2018, the City of West Hollywood adopted a Coyote Management and Coexistence Plan. This plan outlines strategies to reduce the potential for harm and offers practical tips on coexistence, including what to do if you encounter a coyote. Residents are encouraged to watch the video and review the plan, both of which are available on the City's website at go.weho.org/coyotes.

The City of West Hollywood will continue working with Los Angeles County agencies to monitor coyote activity and support community education in West Hollywood on safe coexistence.
