Students First: HACLA and Partners Power LA Families for Back-to-School

Backpacks, fresh food, household essentials, vision screenings, and vital healthcare services provided to public housing families ahead of the school year

LOS ANGELES, CA - As the summer break ends and children across Los Angeles head back to the classroom, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) reaffirmed its commitment to education as a vital pathway to long-term opportunity and success.

Throughout August, HACLA mobilized resident leaders, community organizations, and public safety partners to host a series of regional back-to-school resource fairs within public housing developments. Agency teams brought these critical resources straight into the heart of local neighborhoods, distributing thousands of backpacks packed with essential school supplies to ensure students begin the new school year ready to learn, grow, and thrive.

Citywide events reached families residing in San Fernando Gardens, Avalon Gardens, Pueblo Del Rio, Mar Vista Gardens, Gonzaque Village, Nickerson Gardens, and Imperial Courts.

"Nothing matters more than our students and their families," said HACLA President & CEO Lourdes Castro Ramírez. "This month, HACLA joined forces with trusted partners to bring the right resources-school supplies, nutritious food, household essentials, vision care, and vital health services-right where families live. We're thankful for the many organizations and resident leaders who show up for our communities and help every child begin the year ready to learn, grow, and thrive."

Key community partners making these events possible include The Coalition for Responsible Community Development, Soledad Enrichment Action, Volunteers of America, L.A. Care, Gomez Family Food Bank, Blue Shield of California, HELPER Foundation, POWER, YMCA, LAPD Community Safety Partnership, AltaMed, West Coast Dental, and UCLA Head Start.
