Record enrollment, strong retention and growing national recognition highlight continued momentum for the university

As fall semester classes begin today, Lipscomb University is marking its 135th year with a new enrollment record as first-day figures indicate the largest Day 1 total enrollment in university history at 4,843 students. Combined with an enrollment of more than 1,400 students at Lipscomb Academy, the university's two-year-old through 12th grade college preparatory school, the Lipscomb community is serving nearly 6,250 students across its Nashville campus this fall.
The record reflects strength across several areas of the university, including graduate enrollment growth and student retention. First-day graduate enrollment topped 1,800 for the first time in school history and includes the first students enrolled in Lipscomb's new Master of Science in Anesthesiology program. The university also recorded increases in sophomore-to-junior, junior-to-senior and first-year transfer retention. The strong start to the fall semester follows one of Lipscomb's strongest summer term enrollments in recent years, further reflecting sustained enrollment momentum.
Final fall enrollment numbers will be available in mid-September following the university's official census. University administrators anticipate additional enrollment growth as several graduate program cohorts begin classes in the coming weeks.
"There is tremendous momentum at Lipscomb right now, and this record first-day enrollment is another reflection of that," said Lipscomb President Candice McQueen. "Students and families are increasingly recognizing the value of a Lipscomb education - one that combines academic excellence with a Christ-centered community and experiences that prepare students for lives of purpose. As our university continues to grow in both size and national reputation, our focus remains the same, providing an exceptional education that forms students intellectually, personally and spiritually and equips them to make a meaningful difference in the world."
The sustained enrollment growth over the past two decades highlights the university's rising reputation as a top-tier, nationally recognized institution. Ranked the #13 Christian university in the nation by Niche.com and awarded a four-star rating in Money magazine's 2026 Best Colleges for the second consecutive year, Lipscomb continues to distinguish itself as one of the country's leading Christian universities. In U.S. News & World Report's 2026 Best Colleges rankings, the university climbed 22 places among National Universities. Lipscomb was also named a 2026-27 College of Distinction, included in Forbes' 2026 Top Colleges rankings and recognized by Phi Theta Kappa for excellence in serving transfer students for the 10th consecutive year. The College of Education earned Tennessee's highest educator preparation rating for the 14th consecutive year, and Lipscomb became the first university in Tennessee to earn International Dyslexia Association accreditation for its undergraduate and initial teacher licensure programs. Its teacher preparation programs also received national recognition from the National Council on Teacher Quality for excellence in the science of reading, while Lipscomb's Bachelor of Arts in animation program was ranked No. 13 in the nation and No. 1 in Tennessee for the fifth consecutive year by Animation Career Review. This spring, graduate student Claire Edmondson became Lipscomb's 20th Fulbright finalist.
"We are seeing strength across multiple areas of enrollment, and that is particularly encouraging," said Byron Lewis, vice president of enrollment management. "The growth in our graduate programs and strong retention of current students contribute to this first-day milestone. These results reflect the collective work of people across the university to create an outstanding student experience, and they also demonstrate that more students are recognizing the distinctive value of a Lipscomb education."
Retention results are reinforced by continued strength in student satisfaction and employee engagement. In Lipscomb's annual student satisfaction survey, overall student satisfaction improved in nearly 80% of the indicators measured. The university also begins the academic year with the strongest faculty and staff retention rate in its history at 95%.
The strong first-day enrollment comes at a time of significant momentum for the university. Lipscomb recently completed its Impact 360 strategic plan, which helped drive growth and investment in academics, research, student experience and campus infrastructure. Earlier this month, the university launched Lipscomb Rising 2030, a new strategic vision designed to build on that foundation and guide Lipscomb's continued growth and impact through the end of the decade.
Located in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, Lipscomb University is a Christ-centered community that is one of the few institutions in the nation offering educational pathways from age two through the doctoral level. Students can begin their journey at Lipscomb Academy's SEED School and continue through a full spectrum of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs-making Lipscomb a unique two-year-old to Ph.D. institution. With an enrollment of more than 4,800 university students and over 1,400 at Lipscomb Academy, the institution is deeply embedded in the Middle Tennessee community, committed to shaping lives of character, leadership and service. Its rigorous academic programs are paired with life-transforming experiences, all guided by a mission to prepare students for lives of purpose. For more information, visit https://www.lipscomb.edu.
