Research by Matthew Castel, assistant professor of supply chain management, and Timothy Dunne, associate professor of management, was recently featured in HealthExec magazine, a publication that shares news and strategies for healthcare executives and leaders.
The article highlights Castel and Dunne's research, which shows that hospitals don't need to choose between specializing in specific treatments or offering a wide variety of services because both strategies are shown to successfully lower costs per patient. However, the study found that hospital size changes how these strategies affect patient satisfaction. Specializing leads to higher satisfaction at small hospitals, while large hospitals are better able to offer a wide range of services without negatively impacting patient satisfaction.
Castel and Dunne's full research paper was published in Health Care Management Science in January 2026.
