The Party of European Socialists (PES) warmly congratulates António José Seguro on his election as President of the Portuguese Republic, following Sunday's presidential vote, where he secured a decisive victory with 66.82% of the votes counted (due to weather constraints, several parishes have postponed the vote to 15 February).
This result sends a strong and unmistakable message from the Portuguese people: a clear choice for democracy, constitutional values, and a President who unites rather than divides. At a moment of profound political and social challenges across Europe, Portugal has chosen stability, responsibility, and respect for fundamental rights.
António José Seguro's victory reaffirms the central role of democratic leadership rooted in dialogue, inclusion, and institutional integrity. It stands as a rejection of extremism and a confirmation that progressive values continue to resonate strongly with citizens.
Stefan Löfven, President of the PES, stated:
"This is a powerful democratic moment for Portugal. António José Seguro's election shows that when voters are offered a credible, principled, and unifying choice, democracy wins. Portugal has chosen a President who will defend constitutional values, protect rights, and bring people together."
Giacomo Filibeck, PES Secretary General, added:
"António José Seguro victory is due to the large majority of voters going across partisan lines in order to preserve a key democratic institution in Portugal. This is a message for all democratic political forces in the rest of Europe: progress, unity and respect for democratic institutions remain the strongest answer to extremism."
