Van Sickle's book earns award

Appleton was the first of the white officers in the most famous Civil War regiment of Black soldiers. Van Sickle said he was grateful to be able to shed light on how Appleton documented his history-making group.

"These guys understood the importance of the moment," Van Sickle said. "The lengths they went to document it, they knew this was a moment of great consequence."

The book award winners received a plaque honoring the book and a $1,000 cash award.

The Army Historical Foundation, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the American soldier.
