Johnson County's two airports will receive runway and airfield improvements after an award of $4.3 million from the federal government's Airport Infrastructure Grant program.
The funds will support infrastructure improvements to improve safety and reliability at New Century AirCenter, near 175th Street and Interstate 35, and Johnson County Executive Airport, at 151st Street and Pflumm Road.
These airports are critical pieces of aviation infrastructure serving corporate, business and general aviation users. With more than 96,000 operations annually and approximately 183 aircraft based on-site, New Century AirCenter is the second-busiest airport in Kansas. The Executive Airport, which is the fourth busiest towered airport in the state, sees more than 56,000 operations annually and has approximately 143 aircraft based on site.
"Johnson County's airports are powerful economic engines, and I'm grateful to U. S. Representative Sharice Davids for championing projects that bolster continued regional economic vitality," said Mike Kelly, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. "This federal investment helps us modernize essential infrastructure and ensure our airports continue to serve as strong and reliable assets for local businesses, emergency services and aviation growth throughout the region."
Airport Executive Director Bryan Johnson said the upgrades would support both day-to-day operations and long-range development.
"These funds help us deliver high-impact improvements that enhance safety and position our airports to meet growing demand," Johnson said. "When we invest in airfield infrastructure, we're also investing in business expansion, workforce opportunities and the continued momentum of the aviation industry in Johnson County."
Johnson County will use the grant for new airfield signage and runway and lighting reconstruction at New Century AirCenter, as well as taxiway reconstruction and rehabilitation at Johnson County Executive Airport
Of the $4.3 million awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration, $1.5 million will be dedicated to updating the airport master plans at both facilities. The airport master plan update is a two-year process that will begin shortly.
