Díaz-Balart Reintroduces Legislation to Create a Unique ZIP Code for the Town of Miami Lakes

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL-26) reintroducedlegislation in the 119thCongress to establish a unique ZIP code for the Town of Miami Lakes. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schutlz (D-FL-25) is a co-lead on the bill.

The Senate Companion billwas introduced by Senators Rick Scott (R-FL), Joni Ernst (R-IA), and Alex Padilla (D-CA).

"The Town of Miami Lakes, which I have the privilege and honor of representing, has faced countless hurdles since its incorporation in 2000 due to the lack of its own ZIP code," said Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart. "Residents experience frequent delays and delivery issues with mail and packages, inaccurate census data negatively impacts the Town's operating revenue-affecting funding intended for vulnerable populations like seniors- and insurance rates, especially automobile insurance, wildly fluctuate. Additionally, voters often face confusion at the polls because of unclear precinct assignments.

"This situation is unacceptable. Now well over two decades after its incorporation into Miami-Dade County, it is long past time for Miami Lakes to receive its own unique ZIP code. I remain steadfast in my efforts to support the people of Miami Lakes and to improve their quality of life. I also want to thank Senator Rick Scott for introducing the companion legislation in the Senate. I urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to support and pass this bill on behalf of the residents of Miami Lakes."

"Miami Lakes has waited over 20 years for a zip code that reflects our identity and meets our needs. Our residents deserve accurate services, fair insurance rates, and clarity at the polls. It's time to pass H.R. 672 and give our community the relief it has long been promised. I want to thank Senator Scott and Congressman Diaz-Balart for their steadfast efforts in making a stand-alone zip code for Miami Lakes and similarly affected communities a reality," said Mayor Joshua Dieguez.

Background:

In 2016, Díaz-Balart successfully included a provision in H.R. 6303 that would have authorized USPS to establish a dedicated ZIP code for Miami Lakes and several other municipalities. This bill passed the U.S. House and was sent to the U.S. Senate for further consideration. Similarly, in 2018, Diaz-Balart introduced a bill to designate a unique ZIP code for Miami Lakes, which also passed the House and was sent to the U.S. Senate for further consideration. Additionally, in 2019, 2021, and 2023Rep. Díaz-Balart introduced similar legislation to address this issue.
