City Enhances Coordination Ahead of Potential Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

The City of Santa Fe is operating under an enhanced coordination posture through Sept. 26 as the community prepares for significant rainfall and the possibility of flooding.

Wednesday remains the day of greatest concern. Current planning assumptions call for approximately 2 to 3 inches of rain, with a higher-end scenario of 4 to 6 inches.

Potential impacts include flooding in arroyos and urban areas, standing water, road closures, flooding along the Santa Fe River and tributaries, lightning and localized strong wind gusts.

"Santa Fe is at its best when we look out for one another," said Mayor Michael J. Garcia. "We are preparing as a City, and I ask every Santa Fean to do the same, stay informed, make a plan, avoid flooded roads and check on a neighbor who may need a helping hand. A little preparation and a lot of community spirit can make a real difference when the weather turns."

City departments are coordinating through Emergency Management with a focus on protecting life, maintaining essential services, and keeping emergency routes accessible.

City operations will include:

• Monitoring arroyos, the Santa Fe River, drainage facilities, ponds, parks and other known flood-prone areas.

• Assessing and closing unsafe roads and addressing traffic and drainage hazards.

• Maintaining emergency access and essential water, wastewater, communications, transportation and utility services.

• Protecting City facilities, vehicles and equipment and preserving the City's ability to respond to emergencies.

• Sharing resources among departments as conditions change and additional needs arise.

• Residents are encouraged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to stay away from fast-moving water. Conditions can change quickly during heavy rainfall.

Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

For flooded roads, debris, and other non-life-threatening concerns, residents should notify the City's Constituent Services rather than calling 911. Reports submitted through the system can be tracked and prioritized by City staff.
