Notes of freedom sounds in Nairobi

From 15th to 19th February, Kenyan spectators and music enthusiasts were treated to a rare performance of Ukrainian music, performed by Dr. Taras Filenko, who is visiting the region.

Dr. Taras Filenko is an ethnomusicologist, lecturer, and concert pianist renowned for his research and proliferation of Ukrainian music history of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The performance was a reminder that even in times of war, the music should not stop.

European Union in Kenya

The performances, featuring works by Ukrainian composers, and complemented by Kenyan artists, provided the audience with an overview of the effect of war on the Ukrainian society, and travelled through the evolution of the music, during times of occupation and times of war. The concert at the Kenya National Theater was a reminder of the devastating circumstances currently facing Ukrainian citizens, who have to live with the consequences of the Russian invasion, with the war now sadly entering its fourth year.

In attendance, the Ambassador of the European Union to Kenya, H.E. Henriette Geiger, together with European Union Member State Ambassadors, including the Ambassador of Germany in Kenya who gave a surprise guest performance, and the Ambassador of Ukraine.

In her speech at the opening of the performance, Ambassador Geiger shared "Music reminds us of our basic humanity, even in the worst times of war. Music brings strength and hope in times of despair, and as long as he have this, nothing is lost."
