Spring Safety: Protecting Your Home, Your Property, and Yourself

By Captain Greg Simon, Patrol Sector 3, Alexandria Police Department

As the weather warms and spring returns to Alexandria, more of us are spending time outdoors; opening windows to let in fresh air, riding bikes along our trails, or heading out for walks and runs through our neighborhoods. It's one of the best times of year to enjoy our city, but it's also a good time to refresh some basic safety habits that can help protect your home, your property, and yourself.

From my experience working patrol across Alexandria's neighborhoods, many property crimes happen simply because an opportunity presents itself. The good news is that a few simple preventative steps can make a big difference in reducing those opportunities.

Property Theft Prevention

One of the most important things residents can do is make sure their homes remain secure as routines change with the warmer weather. It's easy to leave a window open while running errands or forget to secure a sliding door when stepping outside for a few minutes. Taking a moment to double-check that doors and windows are locked, even when you are home, can help prevent unwanted entry. Residents should also remember to lock their vehicle doors and remove valuables from inside parked cars, as unlocked vehicles are often an easy target for theft. Simple steps such as installing motion sensor lights around entryways, trimming landscaping that could provide hiding spots, and making sure garages and sheds are secured can also help deter someone looking for an easy target. Small actions like retrieving packages promptly, requiring a signature, or coordinating with neighbors to keep an eye on deliveries can further reduce opportunities for theft. These simple precautions go a long way in protecting your home and neighborhood.

Bike Theft Prevention

Spring also brings more bicycles onto Alexandria's streets and trails. Cycling is a great way to enjoy the season, but bikes can unfortunately be a frequent target for theft. One of the most effective ways to protect your bicycle is to use a strong, high-quality lock and ensure you are locking the frame of the bike, not just the wheel. Whenever possible, secure both wheels and park in visible, well-lit areas where there is regular foot traffic. Removing accessories like lights or bags when you leave your bike unattended can also prevent opportunistic theft. We also encourage riders to record their bicycle's serial number, make, model and consider registering their bike. If a theft does occur, that information can be incredibly helpful in recovering stolen property.

Outdoor Safety

Another thing we see more of in the spring is residents taking advantage of the warmer weather by walking or running outdoors. Alexandria has incredible trails, parks, and walkable neighborhoods, and we want everyone to feel comfortable using them safely. One important reminder is to remain aware of your surroundings. Many people enjoy listening to music or podcasts while exercising but wearing both headphones at high volume can make it difficult to hear approaching cyclists, vehicles, or someone calling for help. Consider keeping one ear free or lowering the volume so you can stay aware of what's happening around you.

It's also important to stay alert while walking or running. Avoid becoming too focused on your phone or other distractions, and try to stick to well-lit, populated routes whenever possible. Wearing reflective clothing or accessories can make you more visible, when walking, running, or cycling. Also, let someone know your route if you are heading out alone for a longer run and trust your instincts; if something doesn't feel right, change direction or move toward a more populated area. Situational awareness is one of the most effective tools anyone can use to stay safe.

Community Awareness

Finally, one of the strongest tools we have in preventing crime is community awareness. Getting to know your neighbors and looking out for one another creates a stronger, safer neighborhood for everyone. If you see something that seems suspicious (whether it's someone checking door handles, lingering near parked bikes, or unfamiliar activity around a home) please report it. Our officers would always rather check on something early than respond after a crime has occurred.

Crime prevention works best when it's a partnership between the community and the Alexandria Police Department. By taking a few simple steps and remaining aware of what's happening around you, we can all help keep Alexandria a safe place to live, work, and enjoy the spring season.

If you need to report suspicious activity or a non-emergency crime, please contact the Alexandria Police Department Non-Emergency Line at 703-746-4444.

Together, we can continue protecting our homes, our neighborhoods, and each other.
