Flanagan Park improvements to expand access, safety and recreation for central Colorado Springs neighborhood

The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Department will rehabilitate Flanagan Park, bringing long-requested improvements that will enhance safety, accessibility and recreational opportunities for a central Colorado Springs neighborhood.

The rehabilitation project will include construction of a new playground and ADA-accessible walking path with pedestrian lighting and benches, new screen fencing, resurfacing of the basketball court, and improvements to landscaping, irrigation and the existing picnic pavilion. These enhancements are designed to create a safer, more welcoming space for residents of all ages and abilities.

The project is funded through a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), coordinated through the City's Department of Housing and Homelessness Response.

Flanagan Park, located at 3132 N. Prospect Street, was built in the mid-1970s. The park serves a diverse, multigenerational neighborhood, including families, older adults and nearby assisted living residents.

"Investing in Flanagan Park is about creating a safe, accessible place where neighbors can gather, stay active and build community close to home," said Aimee Cox, Chief Housing and Homelessness Response Officer. "We are excited that we could identify funding to help make the improvements to this park a reality for our community."

Residents are invited to attend a community meeting on Thursday, May 7, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Edison Elementary School to review plans, ask questions and share feedback. A representative from the Housing and Homelessness Response Department will also attend, along with staff from the City's Stormwater Enterprise to answer questions on the Templeton Gap Levee Project.
