NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (April 2, 2026) - The city and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office are issuing a formal warning to residents following a surge in sophisticated utility scams targeting PSE&G customers.
Fraudsters are increasingly using unsolicited texts, emails, and phone calls to claim that service terms have changed or that immediate disconnection is imminent due to non-payment.
These scammers often possess accurate personal details, such as your home address, to build trust. However, they frequently use links with subtle typos or pressure victims into calling fraudulent "management" numbers to resolve fake account issues.
How to Protect Yourself:
-
Verify Identity: All PSE&G employees are required to carry and present official ID. If they cannot produce it, do not allow them entry.
-
Official Channels Only: Never call a number provided by a solicitor. For verification, call PSE&G directly at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).
-
No Cash Refunds: PSE&G will never come to your door offering cash refunds; credits are only applied to your account or mailed via check.
If you encounter a suspicious individual, call 911 immediately. To report a scam, contact the New Brunswick Police at (732) 745-5200.
