Mayor Adams' announcement of historic baselining of these services, which are integral to making New York City safer for all residents, is a critical step in ensuring they cannot be cut by future administrations. ATIs and reentry programs increase public safety and decrease taxpayer costs by preventing unnecessary jail, emergency room, and shelter stays, and are essential to supporting the well-being of individuals, families, and communities throughout the five boroughs. These services and supports range from substance use and mental health treatment that saves lives to transformative peer mentoring and group sessions that help young people learn and practice effective conflict resolution.
We applaud the NYC Council for having called for full restoration of these funds in their Preliminary Budget response, and the Administration for heeding that call. Now, in the face of federal cutbacks, we look to both the Mayor and Council to increase funding so we can fill remaining gaps and shore up new programming. We look forward to continuing to partner with the City to enhance community and achieve true public safety for all New Yorkers.
