WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on the Trump Administration's decision to withdraw the United States from 66 international organizations that it views as "contrary to the interests of the United States":
"The Trump Administration continues to abdicate U.S. global leadership and hand influence directly to our adversaries. While Beijing is actively expanding its influence, weaponizing controls over critical minerals and shaping global standards, the United States is stepping aside and allowing China to set the rules.
"This administration is withdrawing from organizations that enhance transparency in critical minerals trade, improve coordination of global counter-terrorism and climate change efforts, reduce maternal mortality and protect women and children. For decades, U.S. participation in these international organizations has kept Americans safer, opened markets for U.S. businesses and advanced American interests. Once again, President Trump has decided to leave Americans less safe, less secure and less prosperous.
"We can all agree that reforms are necessary to ensure every tax dollar is spent as effectively as possible, but leaving our seat at the table empty does not advance U.S. interests-it cedes ground to our competitors. When the United States steps back, China steps forward."
