On April 8, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) announced $8.1 million in new Renewables Ready Communities Awards (RRCA) to support solar energy development across the state. This fourth round of funding will help create over 1,800 megawatts of solar-enough to power more than 1.8 million homes and businesses.
The RRCA program provides flexible grants to local governments that host large-scale renewable energy projects with the goal of accelerating Michigan's clean energy buildout while supporting local infrastructure and energy affordability.
"These awards will enable communities to invest where they see needs in infrastructure, public safety, and more…" said EGLE Director Phil Roos.
Lee Township in Calhoun County received the largest share-just over $4 million-for its Sunfish Solar 1 and 2 projects. Other awards went to local governments in Branch, Sanilac, Jackson, Oceana, Huron, Barry, and Gratiot counties.
Since launching in October 2024, the RRCA program has awarded more than $20 million to 29 communities across the state. An interactive map on EGLE's RRCA webpage provides more information on awardees and project details.
