The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the opening of a new mezzanine-to-platform elevator at the 14 St-Union Sq station. The elevator was installed on budget and one month ahead of schedule. Mid-American installed the elevator, which will be maintained by the MTA. Accessible via ramp from the mezzanine, the new elevator provides a direct route to the platform and strengthens accessibility at one of the system's busiest transfer hubs.
"We're completing critical elevator replacements faster than ever while expanding accessibility across the system," said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. "Union Square is the latest example-delivering more reliable access where riders need it most, on budget and ahead of schedule."
"Modernized elevators mean fewer unexpected outages and a more reliable commute," said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo. "We are committed to continue our efforts to improve accessibility for everyone, and I am excited for us to finish upgrading all of the elevators at a crucial hub like Union Square."
Work to install the new elevator included a full replacement of the elevator cab and associated equipment within the shaft and pit. Crews also modified the shaft and pit to accommodate modern equipment designed to deliver a smoother ride and improved long-term reliability.
These upgrades reflect the MTA's broader elevator and escalator modernization program, which is improving reliability across the system faster than ever. In 2025, the MTA completed a record 39 elevator replacements-more than double the previous record of 16 set in 2021. The MTA has continued building on this progress, most recently announcing a series of newly modernized elevator replacements across 11 subway stations earlier this month.
There are other elevator replacement projects in progress in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. Details can be found here.
