State Archives Celebrates Archives Month in October

Corrected dates of Little Kids, Big World: Genealogy With the State Archives, Saturday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday, Oct. 15

BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota State Archives joins archives across the country in celebrating American Archives Month in October. American Archives Month focuses on the importance of records of enduring value and recognizes people and programs responsible for maintaining our communities' vital historical records.

"We are excited to promote, honor, and celebrate the work archivists perform while preserving the traditions, memories, and stories as memory keepers of the state's history," said Shane Molander, state archivist.

Free public programs are available throughout October at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.

  • Archiving Out Loud! Archivists will showcase their daily work tasks such as preservation, organization, and digitization of collection items in the ND Heritage Center & State Museum's Corridor of History.

  • Little Kids, Big World: Oral History With the State Archives. Join archivists at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, and Wednesday, Oct. 8, to learn about oral history. Have your family members shared stories from long ago? Discover the many spoken stories in the State Archives.

  • Genealogy in North Dakota Workshop. Not sure where to start to learn more about your family history? On Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. learn about the resources available and start your own family history journey. Space is limited; sign up early at https://research-family-history.eventbrite.com.
  • Little Kids, Big World: Genealogy With the State Archives. Explore genealogy-the history of your family-at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday, Oct. 15. Think about your family members, and chart how you are related on your own family tree.

  • Prairie Public's "Dakota Datebook." Check out history stories featuring content from the State Archives at bit.ly/datebook-archives-month.

The State Archives, located inside the ND Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck, is responsible for acquiring, preserving, and referencing the documentary holdings of the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The State Archives is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the second Saturday of each month, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The ND Heritage Center & State Museum is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, visit history.nd.gov/archives or call 701.328.2091.
