Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement in response to claims from President Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that women who take Tylenol, or its generic name acetaminophen, during their pregnancy will increase the risk of autism in their children:
"The claim from President Trump and Secretary Kennedy is baseless. Scientists and doctors agree that Tylenol, or acetaminophen, is one of few safe pain relievers available to women during their pregnancy. President Trump and Secretary Kennedy's claim is misinformation and it should not be taken seriously, as it could lead to women taking dangerous alternatives.
"Additionally, the autism 'treatment' that Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just approved is not proven to work and Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administer, potentially stands to profit due to his ties to a leucovorin supplement, which is not FDA approved. Leucovorin has been approved to help individuals receiving high dose chemotherapy, and I fear the administration's absurd statements could lead to shortages for these patients.
"Secretary Kennedy himself said Americans should not take medical advice from him. On this matter, I encourage people to listen to him and instead speak directly with their health care providers."
