MLK Day Celebration in West Des Moines

The City of West Des Moines Human Rights Commission and the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce in partnership with West Des Moines Community Schools, West Des Moines Historical Society, Des Moines University, Taste of the Junction, Meals from the Heartland, and Polk County are honored to host a community celebration on Monday, January 19, 2026, to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This free MLK Day event will be held at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex, 6500 Grand Avenue, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All individuals and families are welcome to attend. The event will feature a keynote speaker, and will be filled with great musical performances, food, educational exhibits, and scholarships and community awards. This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Vicky Long Hill, lawyer, community champion, and lifelong resident of West Des Moines, who was named the Community Leadership Award winner at the 2025 West Des Moines MLK Day Celebration.

Attending the celebration is an opportunity to reflect on our shared responsibility to advance justice, human rights, and service in our community. Register to attend the MLK Day celebration.

West Des Moines Youth, Community & Business Leadership Awards
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. West Des Moines Youth, Community & Business Leadership Awards are presented annually by the City of West Des Moines Human Rights Commission, the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and the WDM MLK Day Planning Committee to those who have demonstrated leadership and made significant contributions in the areas of promoting peace and understanding; celebrating belonging and respect for all; and improving communication and cooperation between diverse populations in the West Des Moines community/schools. A total of three Youth Scholarships will be awarded, one Community Leadership award winner, and one Business Leadership award winner will be selected. Apply for an award or make a nomination.

Meals from the Heartland Service Project
Residents are encouraged to participate in the National Day of Service by packaging meals for local residents on Monday, January 19, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at a Meals from the Heartland packaging event. Participants may register for morning and afternoon shifts on the Meals from the Heartland website.

Historic Jordan House Museum (2001 Fuller Road)
Discover the rich history of West Des Moines, including its connection to the Underground Railroad. Free tours will also occur on Sunday, January 18, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
