Rep. Gillen Urges House Republican Leadership Immediately Begin Impeachment Proceedings Against Secretary Kristi Noem

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) called on Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan to immediately commence impeachment proceedings to remove Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem from office.

"If the head of any other law enforcement agency ran their department the way Secretary Noem has run DHS, they would be investigated, fired and replaced immediately," said Rep. Gillen. "All law enforcement agencies are required to operate within the bounds of the law, and DHS should be held to the same standard. Secretary Noem is incapable and unfit to lead the Department of Homeland Security. She must be removed to restore law and order and ensure that necessary accountability reforms to federal immigration enforcement will be enacted."

Rep. Gillen has repeatedly called for the removal of Secretary Noem following the tragic killings of American citizens at the hands of federal agents. In her letter, Gillen highlights the urgency of Noem's removal following her disastrous record of sending poorly trained federal agents into American cities, misusing taxpayer dollars, and stoking chaos and distrust across the country.

Dear Speaker Johnson and Chairman Jordan:

Secretary Kristi Noem's leadership of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been a complete disaster, and she is no longer fit to lead the agency. That is why the House of Representatives must immediately commence Judiciary Committee impeachment proceedings to remove her from office.

The American people deserve to feel safe in their communities and to know that federal law enforcement will operate within the bounds of the law. Tragically, the killings of U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis last month are a direct result of Secretary Noem's complete and total mismanagement of the Department of Homeland Security. Secretary Noem's failed leadership has already cost American lives and continues to put our communities at risk.

There must be accountability for the unjust killing of American citizens to prevent further damage and to restore the public's trust. As Congress continues to negotiate meaningful reforms for federal immigration enforcement, the House of Representatives has a responsibility to immediately begin impeachment proceedings to remove Secretary Noem from office.

During her disastrous tenure as head of DHS, Secretary Noem has shown a complete disregard for law and order, lost control over the Department, egregiously misused taxpayer dollars, stoked violence, and failed to keep the American people safe.

Secretary Noem has deliberately wasted hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. This includes the purchase of two luxury private jets to support her travel and a public advertising campaign improperly awarded to companies with close ties to Noem and other senior officials.

Instead of prioritizing the capture of violent criminals, Secretary Noem has escalated dangerous situations by slashing training for ICE recruits - including on legal use of force - and sent unprepared agents into the streets, making everyone less safe. Noem has also diverted federal agents and resources from combating cybersecurity attacks, child abuse, human trafficking and terrorism, putting our national security and communities at even greater risk.
