More pickleball coming to Tempe Sports ComplexPost Date:11/10/2025 3:00 PM Something is brewing at Tempe Sports Complex, and it's kind of a big dill! Construction begins Nov. 17 on eight new pickleball courts, doubling the facility's capacity from eight to 16 courts. Fencing around the project area will go up the week of Nov. 10. During construction, the two easternmost courts will be temporarily closed, but the other six courts will remain open for play. Additional indoor and outdoor pickleball court options can be found at various times and locations throughout the city. The project is scheduled for completion by late spring or early summer 2026. Once finished, all 16 pickleball courts will be available for classes and drop-in play. The current pickleball courts at Tempe Sports Complex originally opened in 2019 and featured the first ADA-accessible courts in the state. The courts are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis outside of scheduled classes. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines many elements of tennis and badminton. It has become a rapidly growing phenomenon, attracting players of all ages and activity levels. The new courts are made possible through the Parks Capital Improvement Program, which is investing more than $60 million into Tempe parks over the next five years. This amenity expansion reflects community feedback gathered during the Tempe Parks and Recreation Master Plan update, which identified the need for additional courts. ### Project Contacts: Cara Kamienski, Parks and Recreation
