State Representative Ty Moore (R-Caldwell) announced that legislation designating a portion of U.S. Route 22 in Harrison County as the "PFC Thomas 'Tommy' Pizzino Memorial Highway" has now passed through the Ohio House and Senate.
House Bill 385 honors the life, service, and sacrifice of PFC Thomas "Tommy" Pizzino, a Harrison County native who served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Pizzino enlisted in the Army in January 1965 and was deployed to South Vietnam later that year.
On November 17, 1965, at the age of 20, PFC Pizzino was killed in action by communist forces during the Battle of Ia Drang. In recognition of his extraordinary courage and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal for Valor.
This highway designation covers the eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. Route 22 between the eastern border of Harrison County and the intersection with State Route 151. The designation serves as a lasting tribute to Pizzino's bravery and ensures his legacy will continue to be recognized within the community he called home.
"I am honored to help recognize a true American hero and ensure his legacy is remembered for years to come," said Rep. Moore.
Following initial passage through the House in February, the provision was ultimately included in Senate Bill 52, omnibus legislation now approved by both chambers that designated multiple memorial roads across the state and created specialty license plates.
The bill now awaits the Governor's signature.
