NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan welcomed nearly 1,000 job seekers and 55 employers to its first community job fair, held in partnership with New York State Senator Jose M. Serrano and the New York State Department of Labor. The event brought residents from across New York City to Metropolitan to meet employers, explore career pathways, and access workforce development resources. Interest was evident before the doors opened, with a line of attendees stretching around East 97th Street and First Avenue. Job seekers met directly with employers from healthcare, government, education, social services, transportation, and private industry to explore available positions and receive career guidance.

"We are proud to partner with New York State Senator Jose M. Serrano, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, and the New York State Department of Labor to bring employment opportunities directly to our community," said Julian John, Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. "Metropolitan is a beacon of hope in East Harlem, and supporting our neighbors means investing in their health and their future. This job fair brings that commitment to life by connecting people with employers and resources that can help them build a better future for themselves and their families."

"This job fair demonstrates what can happen when community leaders, government agencies, and local institutions work together to create opportunities for residents," said New York State Senator Jose M. Serrano. "Communities throughout East Harlem and the South Bronx continue to face unemployment rates above the national average. Bringing employers directly into our neighborhoods helps connect residents with meaningful opportunities that can strengthen families and promote long-term economic stability."

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal praised the strong turnout and partnership behind the event.

"I'm very impressed with the turnout at NYC Health + Hospitals / Metropolitan, and I thank my friend, State Senator Jose M. Serrano, and the hospital for this partnership," said Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Manhattan Borough President. "This job fair shows what we can accomplish when government, nonprofit organizations, and neighborhood partners work together to help New Yorkers find jobs and build brighter futures."

By welcoming job seekers into the hospital, Metropolitan provided a familiar community setting where residents could explore opportunities for themselves and their families. People entering the workforce or considering a career change could learn about their options by speaking directly with employers about their goals.

"It was inspiring to see so many people walk through our doors excited about their future," said Elsa Cosme, Chief Operating Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. "Whether someone was entering the workforce, changing careers, or looking for a fresh start, this event provided an opportunity to make valuable connections and explore new possibilities. We were honored to open our hospital to the community in this way."

Among the attendees were Brooklyn residents Nadirah McCarthy and April Willis, both pursuing careers in healthcare.

"I have a background in administration and the dental field, and after graduating in June, I'm looking for a more clinical role," McCarthy said. "Coming to this job fair opened my eyes to opportunities I might not have otherwise found. I made connections that could help me take the next step in my career."

Willis, who recently entered the medical assisting field, said the event offered valuable opportunities for growth and networking.

"Helping people has always been important to me," Willis said. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to meet employers and learn about careers in healthcare. My hope is to one day work at Metropolitan and care for patients in my community."

The job fair was made possible through a partnership among NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, New York State Senator Jose M. Serrano, and the New York State Department of Labor, with support from the offices of Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal; New York State Senators Liz Krueger and Cordell Cleare; New York State Assemblymembers Rebecca Seawright and Eddie Gibbs; New York City Council Member Elsie Encarnacion; and New York City Council Member Virginia Maloney. Together, these partners helped bring employment opportunities directly to the community.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan plans to continue working with community partners to connect residents with employment opportunities and resources that support long-term economic mobility. The strong turnout at its first community job fair highlighted Metropolitan Hospital's role as a resource for East Harlem and surrounding communities.
