Risch Statement on America First Global Health Strategy

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on the Trump Administration's America First Global Health Strategy.

"As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I've long led congressional efforts to make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous by getting ahead of infectious disease threats before they cross our borders. My Global Health Security and International Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response Act, enacted in the 2023 NDAA, provided a framework to make U.S. global health security programs more agile, efficient, and effective by enhancing strategic planning, strengthening disease surveillance, and eliminating redundancies that waste U.S. taxpayer dollars. I am pleased to see many of these priorities reflected in the President's America First Global Health Strategy. I am particularly pleased to see the emphasis on the deployment of technical staff and resources for disease surveillance, surge capacity for an effective response to an infectious disease within 72 hours of detection, and global health security agreements with our partners. Additionally, the Administration's requirement for co-investment and self-financing of front-line health workers in partner countries, and the investment in rigorous monitoring and evaluation systems, will help us do more of what works, eliminate inefficiencies, and save more lives with less money. There are a lot of details to be worked out, but the America First Global Health Strategy will put us on the right path."
