Washington, D.C. - Today, Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee released their draft budget reconciliation proposal, which included drastic cuts to clean energy, vehicles, and manufacturing project tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act to fund tax breaks for Trump and his billionaire friends.

Since its passage in 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act's clean energy tax credits have bolstered projects that reduce pollution, lower costs, and improve public health. The tax credits also paved the way for a historic manufacturing boomin the U.S., with energy companies investing $89 billion-a 305 percent increase from pre-IRA investments-in the sector

The tax credits have also already helped create 312,000 jobsin the clean energy sector, and are estimated to create 1.7 millionjobs in the next decade. These jobs are being added in every state in the country, spanning across party lines. In the Committee Chairman Jason Smith's home state of Missouri, IRA clean energy credits have already created 7,000 jobs, and has the potential to create more than 25,000 jobs by 2030. In Speaker Johnson's home state, the tax credits could add over 10,000 jobs to Louisiana's economy by 2030.

The proposal also includes ending tax credits for clean energy home improvements, support for advanced manufacturing, and tax credits that boost domestic production and lower the cost of new and used electric vehicles.

In response, Sierra Club Director of Climate Policy Patrick Drupp issued the following statement:

"The House Republicans' tax scheme will hit hardworking Americans directly in the pocketbook. Rather than working to deliver lower prices and more jobs for the people they represent, House Republicans would rather attack clean energy, kneecap the economic boom these investments have helped spark, and raise prices on everyday consumers-all to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

"If House Republicans are actually interested in serving the people they represent, they should think twice before slashing hundreds of thousands of jobs across the country and raising energy costs all to score cheap political points and reward the fossil fuel industry that is destroying communities and our environment."
