Southern University, SULC to host 'Exonerated Exhibit' during Women's History Month
Southern University and A&M College, in collaboration with the Louis A. Berry Institute for Civil Rights, Human Rights and Social Justice at the Southern University Law Center, will present the "Exonerated Exhibit," featuring artwork by Becky Gottsegen, from March 3-25 at the Leon R. Tarver II Cultural and Heritage Center. Tonight will feature the "Wrongful Convictions Panel" at 5 p.m., led by law professor Angela A. Allen-Bell.
Held in observance of Women's History Month, the exhibit recognizes both Gottsegen and Allen-Bell for their contributions to advancing dialogue on justice, equity and human rights through art, scholarship and advocacy.
Allen-Bell is known for her work addressing wrongful convictions and systemic inequities within the criminal legal system. Her research and advocacy have influenced legal scholarship, policy discussions and the lives of individuals affected by miscarriages of justice.
Gottsegen's exhibit presents sculpted busts and visual narratives honoring individuals who were wrongfully convicted and later exonerated after serving a combined 726 years in prison. The installation is designed to encourage reflection and public conversation about accountability, reform and the human impact of wrongful incarceration.
The exhibit will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located inside the Leon R. Tarver II Cultural and Heritage Center (8320 G. Leon Netterville Drive).
The following events will be held in conjunction with the exhibit and are free and open to the public:
