AUC Chairperson received candidates for the position of UN Secretary-General

On the margins of the 26th Ordinary Session of the African Union(AU) Executive Council on Strengthening Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa in Luanda, Angola, , H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission, separately received H.E. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, & H.E. Rebeca Grynspan, candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), who paid courtesy calls on him in the context of their respective candidatures.

The exchanges focused on the imperative of reforming the multilateral system, including the UN & international financial institutions, to make them more inclusive, representative & responsive to the priorities & development aspirations of Africa.

The Chairperson underscored the growing importance of African agency & representation in global diplomacy & decision-making, & stressed the need for a multilateral system that is fit for purpose & better reflects contemporary global realities.

Both candidates reaffirmed their commitment, if elected, to advancing these reform efforts & to strengthening Africa's voice, representation & role within global governance & development processes.

Chairperson Youssouf wished H.E. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, & H.E. Rebeca Grynspan every success in their respective candidatures & expressed his readiness to work closely with the future Secretary-General in advancing a more inclusive, effective and representative multilateral system within the framework of the AU-UN Dialogue.
