Leave space to keep cyclists safe! Maintain a safe distance from cyclists

Back to Search

Durham Region is reminding drivers to leave at least one metre of space between their vehicle and bicycles or e-bikes on the road to help keep riders safe.

Motorists may cross the centre line to pass a cyclist if it is safe and legal. Otherwise, they must wait behind the cyclist until it is safe to pass.

Cyclists are not required to leave a specific one metre space; however, they are required to obey all the rules of the road. Cyclists should remain mindful of their surroundings, especially when vehicles are passing by, and maintain a safe position on the road.

For more information about the one metre passing law, visit durham.ca/OneMetre.

Durham Region is working to create safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists through the Durham Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan. To learn more about Durham Vision Zero, visit durham.ca/VisionZero.
