WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-09) shared the following statement honoring the life and legacy of former North Carolina First Lady Dottie Martin, wife of his friend and mentor, Governor Jim Martin:
"Renee and I were saddened to learn of the passing of the extraordinary Dottie Martin, former First Lady of North Carolina. We are praying for my friend and mentor, Governor Jim Martin and the entire Martin family.
"Dottie Martin lived a life of significance with a style and grace that was unmatched. She transformed the role of First Lady as a champion for protecting children and combating child abuse, to fighting substance abuse, to her work on her beloved wildflower program.
"Dottie Martin was ahead of her time, and I fondly think of her often as I travel the highways of North Carolina and see the beautiful wildflowers planted across our state. Martin left this state more beautiful than she found it, and she left an impression on every life she touched. Dottie Martin will be missed, but her life and legacy will never be forgotten," said Rep. Hudson.
The family will hold a funeral at Davidson College Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. The family encourages those attending the funeral who wish to bring flowers to instead donate to the Wildflower Program.
