Winter Weather Updates

Winter Storm Warning in Effect

A Winter Storm warning has been issued by the U.S. National Weather Service through Sunday, January 25 for North and Central Texas. The warning includes very cold temperatures and the potential for moderate to heavy accumulations of snow, sleet, or ice.

Stay weather aware and sign up for emergency alerts from CarrolltonAlert. Check the City's website and social media channels on Facebook, X, and Instagram for the most timely updates.

Facility Updates

The City of Carrollton is monitoring weather conditions to determine if City facility closures are necessary and an announcement will be made tomorrow (1/23).

Park restrooms and water fountains have been winterized and temporarily closed to prevent freezing pipes. They will reopen once temperatures are consistently above freezing.

Power Outages

At this time, ERCOT expects normal grid conditions. However, in the event of a local power outage, power is controlled by the resident's energy provider, Oncor or CoServ, not the City of Carrollton. In the event of a power outage, residents should contact their service provider:

Oncor

Report power outages by calling 888-313-4747, texting O-U-T to 66267, downloading the MyOncor app, or visiting https://stormcenter.oncor.com/.

CoServ

Report power outages by texting OUT to 855-938-3496 or visit CoServ.com/OutageMap for estimated restoration times and other updates.

For an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency incidents, call 972-466-3333 or *247 on mobile.

Winter Driver Safety

The City of Carrollton is preparing for potential winter weather by actively spreading pre-treatment on roads, bridges, and overpasses.

The pre-treatment application is intended to keep ice from forming. If cold conditions and precipitation persist over a longer duration and ice begins to form, crews will respond by implementing sanding operation plan for the higher traffic areas, as well as bridges and overpasses.

Freeze Precautions

Be prepared for any potential winter freezes by remembering to protect the four Ps:

  • PEOPLE: Keep your family warm and check on any elderly relatives or neighbors who may need extra blankets, help winterizing their homes, or a warm place to stay.
  • PETS: Bring pets inside at night to keep them healthy and safe. Take them outside only for short periods of time or quick walks, as the cold ground can cause frostbite on their paws, and wind chill can be damaging to their health. For more winter pet safety tips, read about how to keep pets warm in cold winter weather.
  • PIPES: Cover exposed pipes to prevent freezing and breaks. For more information, read tips on avoiding frozen pipes during winter weather.
  • PLANTS: Either cover plants to keep them warm at night or bring them inside to flourish. Find out more information about cold-weather plant preparation.

Turn Off Your Sprinkler System

When temperatures are near freezing, businesses and residents need to pay close attention to their irrigation systems. On very cold days, the City of Carrollton receives numerous requests to sand roadways and sidewalks that are frozen and slippery due to irrigation overspray. This creates a safety hazard for pedestrians and drivers, and you can be held accountable if your system caused the problem. The City's Water Quality Team issues warnings and/or notices of violation, as well as citations to property owners who allow their irrigation systems to run during a freeze event. This is a critical step in protecting our community members and minimizing City expenditures for ice control. To report a running sprinkler system during temperatures 32 degrees or below, call 972-466-3425.

One way to be sure that your irrigation system is not contributing to the icy conditions is to install a rain and freeze sensor. Not only will these sensors save you money by automatically turning off your system during rain and freeze events, they will also help eliminate potentially hazardous situations such as icy sidewalks and roadways. Residents and businesses of Carrollton can take advantage of the City's free rain and freeze sensor program. Another simple alternative is to turn your irrigation system off until temperatures rise again. For more information, visit cityofcarrollton.com/sprinklersensor
