The City of Casey is leading the way in vape recycling, with 15,482 vape units disposed of across five drop-off locations throughout the municipality.
Thanks to a partnership between Council and Ecocycle, residents have been able to safely dispose of vapes at locations in Clyde, Cranbourne East, Hampton Park, Endeavour Hills and Narre Warren. Collected vapes are then safely transported, disassembled and processed through a specialised recycling system.
In November 2023, the City of Casey became the first Victorian council to establish free vape disposal points. Since then, approximately 24 other councils have followed suit, either opening their own collection points or hosting vape collection events.
Mayor Cr Stefan Koomen recently visited Casey ARC in Narre Warren, where a total of 396 kilograms of vapes has been collected to date.
"This initiative has helped reduce vape litter across the municipality by providing residents with a safe disposal option, addressing the risks associated with placing vapes in kerbside bins, which can lead to fires in collection vehicles and recycling facilities," Cr Koomen said.
