Congressman Cohen Disappointed at Supreme Court Ruling on Tennessee Law Banning Gender-Affirming Care for Minors

WASHINGTON - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today expressed disappointment at the U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding a Tennessee state law banning gender-affirming hormone therapies for transgender people under 18 and ruling against a challenge brought by three transgender adolescents, their families, and a Memphis-based medical provider.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"The decision today in U.S. v. Skrmetti is disappointing. But even if Tennessee's law doesn't violate Equal Protection as understood by this radical right-wing Court majority, it can still do great harm. The law specifically targets a very small and vulnerable population, substituting the judgment of state lawmakers for that of patients, their parents, and physicians about very personal healthcare decisions. Let's trust Americans to make these decisions for themselves."
