Buffalo's Fall Leaf Collection Will Soon Be Underway

Buffalo, NY - The City of Buffalo Department of Public Works (DPW) is reminding property owners that the city's annual fall leaf collection program will soon be underway. Collection will begin in the coming weeks and continue through mid-December, weather permitting. There are two methods available for residents to properly dispose of leaves:

  • Curbside pickup (district-based collection)
  • Residential drop-off at the East Side Transfer Station, located at 793 Ogden Street

Both methods are critical to preventing leaves, grass clippings, and other yard debris from clogging city roadways and storm drains.

Curbside Pickup

Curbside pickup is conducted by district and will continue throughout the season, with timing dependent on volume and weather conditions. This method provides the quickest collection once the majority of leaves have fallen.

Residents should follow these guidelines:

  • Leaves, grass, brush, and small branches must be placed in clear or paper bags.
  • Place bags curbside for collection-city crews will handle the rest.
  • There is no limit to the number of bags that can be placed at the curb.
  • Do not rake leaves into the street. Violators will be fined.

Residential Drop-Off

Residents may also bring their leaves and yard waste to the East Side Transfer Station at 793 Ogden Street, open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All visitors must sign in and show proof of City of Buffalo residency.

Acceptable material at the residential yard waste drop-off site includes:

  • Branches
  • Brush
  • Christmas trees
  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Plant cuttings
  • Stumps
  • Tree trimmings/limbs
  • Uncontaminated wood waste

Unacceptable material includes:

  • Blacktop
  • Rubber
  • Dirt/soil
  • Roofing material
  • Glass
  • Landscape fabric
  • Metal
  • Rocks
  • Concrete

Buffalo's fall leaf collection is part of Bag It Buffalo, a robust leaf collection program designed to keep streets and storm drains clean and clear in neighborhoods citywide. The DPW appreciates the cooperation of residents in helping this year's bagged leaf collection process go as smoothly as possible.
