Zoran Filipi selected for the Internal Combustion Award from ASME

October 9, 2024October 8, 2024

Zoran Filipi of Clemson University has been selected for the Internal Combustion Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The award established in 1966 honors significant contributions or achievements in advancing internal combustion engine engineering through research, innovation, education, or leadership.

Filipi serves as the founding director of two Clemson organizations- the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering and the Virtual Prototyping of Autonomy-Enabled Ground Vehicle Systems (VIPR-GS) Research Center.

His research activities in this field have been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and major industry players, including GM, Stellantis (former Chrysler), Detroit Diesel Corp., Bosch, Bosch-Rexroth and BorgWarner.

The outcomes of several projects were transitioned to industry and subsequently utilized to establish new in-house capabilities or contribute to strategic research-and-development projects.

Dr. Filipi established the Clemson Advanced Propulsion group in Clemson's Department of Automotive Engineering and was able to set up cutting-edge experimental facilities. Efforts of the team put Clemson at the forefront of vehicle propulsion research nationally and internationally, and internal-combustion engines are still an integral part, with recent emphasis on hybrids, renewable bio-based fuels and zero-carbon fuels.

In choosing Filipi for the award, ASME cited him "for pioneering research on the use of thermal barrier coatings to control heat transfer in homogeneous charge compression ignition engines, innovative methodologies for model-based control, and engine-in-the-loop integration for real-world investigations of efficiency and emissions."

He will be presented with the award during ASME's ICE Forward Conference, scheduled for Oct. 20-23 in San Antonio, Texas.
