On Saturday, July 19, Skyhawk Community Park saw the return of an important feature lost in the 2020 Glass Fire-a 320-foot section of split rail fence-thanks to the leadership of a local Eagle Scout candidate and the support of 25 fellow volunteers.
The original fence, which had bordered the park since it was first built, was destroyed during the wildfire and had not yet been replaced. Motivated to give back to the community they live in and where Scout Troop 121 meets weekly, the Scout submitted a project proposal to the City's Recreation & Parks Department and worked with staff to receive a formal approval. A detailed planning and leadership process was also completed through the Scout Council as part of this service project requirement.
Using materials provided by the City, a team of 15 Scouts and 11 adult volunteers assembled at 8 a.m. and completed the fence by 3 p.m.-contributing 161 total hours of service in a single day. The newly installed fence mirrors the original design and location, offering both functionality and a symbol of community resilience.
This project not only restored a beloved feature of the park, but also demonstrated how residents can take initiative to improve public spaces. Anyone interested in leading a similar volunteer-driven project can submit a proposal through the City's Volunteer Project Program. Proposals are reviewed to ensure alignment with City goals and community needs.
