Klobuchar and Colleagues Introduce Bill to Reverse Tariffs on Canada

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) released the following statement on the reintroduction of her bipartisan bill with Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) to undo President Trump's across-the-board tariffs on Canadian goods. As of August 1, the administration has imposed a 35 percent tariff on goods - a move that increases prices for American consumers and businesses, while straining the U.S.-Canada relationship.

"The president cannot abuse his power to continue an unjustified trade war with one of our strongest allies. Canada is Minnesota's top trading partner, but the President's tariffs are jeopardizing that relationship-and adding costs for Minnesota families," said Klobuchar. "We should not raise costs, hurt businesses, and eliminate jobs by attacking our neighbor and ally."

In April, this bill passed the Senate with bipartisan support. As the administration has raised tariffs on Canada, travel from Canada to the US has stalled, with a 20% drop in trips across the border so far this year compared to 2024. This bill is being called up again because these tariffs are subject to congressional review every six months.

Along with Klobuchar and Kaine, the legislation is cosponsored by Senators Rand Paul (R-KY), Mark Warner (D-VA), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Angus King (I-ME), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chris Coons (D-DE) and Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).
