All About the Accounting Internship Early Recruitment Program

A two-time graduate of Marquette University, Laura Poupitch has been immersed in the world of accounting for over 15 years. After earning her graduate degree, Poupitch spent time in industry before returning to the classroom as an instructor. She has served as instructor of practice in accounting at Marquette since 2022 and took on the additional title of accounting internship director a year later, guiding students toward promising career pathways in the field. As part of this role, Poupitch oversees the Accounting Internship Early Recruitment Program and supports students seeking public accounting internships.

What is the Accounting Internship Early Recruitment Program?

"The AIER Program kickstarts the internship search for students with an interest in accounting. While internships are an excellent way to gain industry exposure, students often feel unsure about where to start. The AIER Program is designed to support students as they prepare, search and apply for public accounting internships. Created with motivated freshman and sophomores in mind, the AIER Program helps first- and second-year students navigate the recruiting process earlier than most peers. It also equips them to graduate eligible for the CPA Exam."

What are the benefits for students?

"Students in the AIER Program benefit from personalized course planning with me, the accounting internship director. Together, we'll discuss their professional goals and what they're looking to get out of an internship experience. Students will also complete an individual application readiness assessment through the Business Career Center to identify areas that need extra attention before they begin applying.

"The best way to land a public accounting internship is to start early. By participating in the AIER Program, students ensure they don't miss an opportunity to connect with firms and apply in the first round of applicants. Nothing can quite replicate the immersive experience of an internship - it really offers a leg up after graduation. Plus, internships are pre-approved for academic credit through the AIER Program, meaning students can count their experience as credit toward graduation!"

When can students get involved?

"Freshman and sophomore students with an interest in accounting are encouraged to participate. Students must either be enrolled in or have already completed ACCO 1031."

What can students do to get the most out of this program?

"AIER students should attend all program events and create personal connections with firm professionals. Recruiters are excited to meet the students and form relationships early. We support multi-firm events, small group mentoring with our executive-in-Residence and individualized planning."

If students need support, where can they find help?

"Students are always welcome to for one-on-one support and guidance. is happy to help, too, and both of us are available for in-person or virtual appointments."

What is a piece of advice you'd give to students looking to join this program?

"College is all about embracing opportunities and the AIER Program is no exception. I welcome all interested students to stop by the Swift Student Center to learn more. The AIER Program equips students to hit the ground running, accelerating their professional journey and helping them graduate career-ready with industry experience."
