Coalition Launches Fraud Prevention Task Force to Combat Rising Scams in Mid-Michigan

MASON, Mich., July 23, 2026 - Dart Bank is pleased to announce it is joining with the Ingham County Sheriff's Office, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the City of Lansing Police Department, Fox47 (WSYM), and AARP Michigan to launch the Fraud Prevention Task Force, a new coalition dedicated to informing and protecting residents across Ingham and Jackson counties from the growing threat of fraud.

Fraud continues to take a significant financial toll on Michigan residents. The FBI's 2025 IC3 Report shows Michiganders reported more than $381 million in losses, while nationally, adults aged 60 and older suffered $7.7 billion in reported losses - more than any other age group.

"Fraud can come from anywhere, and unfortunately, scammers are always finding new ways to deceive people," said Michelle Carpenter, SVP/Senior Treasury Management/Retail Officer at Dart Bank. "Staying alert, asking questions, and verifying unexpected requests before sharing personal or financial information can make all the difference. Awareness is our first line of defense, and by looking out for one another, we can help prevent fraud and protect the communities we serve."

By bringing together law enforcement, financial institutions, media partners, and community organizations, the Fraud Prevention Task Force hopes to help educate the public to spot scams and make it easier to report fraud and get help. Tactics will include a coordinated mix of outreach and education, including social media and public service announcements.

"Fraud is an escalating problem, and it demands a community response," said Rich Howard, Associate State Director for AARP Michigan and Chair of the Fraud Prevention Task Force. "AARP is proud to be part of this effort because the more we work together, the harder it is for scammers to succeed. Our goal is simple: give people the information they need to protect themselves and loved ones, so we can reduce the number of people being victimized by scammers."
