College Students: Summer 2025 Paid Internships in the Chesapeake Bay

The Chesapeake Bay is an important ecosystem, both ecologically and economically. Places like wetlands , oyster reefs , and the water column provide important habitat for the more than 3,600 plants and animals that call the Chesapeake Bay home. The Chesapeake produces about 500 million pounds of seafood each year, supporting jobs in both commercial and recreational fishing.

It's a dynamic estuary! To support our work in fisheries and habitat science , and in helping people learn about the Bay , we're offering several paid internships for college students. Interns work with mentors at the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office who are dedicated to helping them gain experience and learn about different types of NOAA careers.

The internships will run from mid-May to mid-August 2025. Applicants must be entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of undergraduate study. They must be a resident and/or attend a college or university in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Here are our summer 2025 internships; applications for these three positions are due by February 7, 2025:

  • Data Programming : Create visualizations using data from the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System and hypoxia monitoring stations, and explore how annual data relates to long-term averages
  • Place-Based Partnerships : Conduct outreach to build relationships between NOAA and other natural resource organizations to support a strategic approach to habitat restoration with partners
  • Environmental Literacy Planning : Help develop a series of resources for the education community that advance the creation and implementation of school district environmental literacy plans

We will also host two paid summer 2025 internships through the Chesapeake Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring program. This program, administered by the Chesapeake Research Consortium, is for students who identify as people of color, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQAI+ community, persons from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and first-generation college students who are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree. Here are the two internships; applications for these positions are due by February 14, 2025:

  • Field Technician : Work alongside NOAA scientists to help maintain monitoring buoys, conduct fish surveys, and track data
  • Climate Education : Support publication of an assessment of climate change education, and help run workshops for educators
