Smarter Airports, Stronger Europe: new publication highlights how innovation is transforming airports

What does airport innovation look like in practice? A new publication from ACI EUROPE and the SESAR Joint Undertaking, Smarter Airports, Stronger Europe: Delivering Aviation Transformation, brings together real-world examples of how airports across Europe are using research and innovation to tackle operational challenges and improve performance.

The publication puts the focus on innovation in action, with case studies covering the journey from research and validation through to implementation and preparation for deployment. Drawing on first-hand experiences from airports and their partners, it shows how new technologies and approaches are being developed and tested, the benefits they can bring to operations, and how experience gained in one environment can help inform the next.

The examples address some of the key challenges facing airports today, including growing passenger demand, constrained infrastructure, the need for greater resilience and the drive to make aviation more sustainable. They demonstrate how better use of data, digital technologies and collaboration can help airports respond to these challenges, while showing how solutions developed and tested in one operational environment can provide inspiration and a pathway for others.

The publication brings these examples together under three themes - smart, seamless and sustainable - reflecting the different ways innovation is helping airports respond to today's challenges and prepare for the future.
