Rosen Joins Cortez Masto in Introducing Legislation to Redirect Excessive ICE Funding to Local Law Enforcement

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) joined U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) in introducing a bill to redirect excessive ICE funding to local police and law enforcement. The PUBLIC SAFETY Act would redirect almost $75 billion in additional funding from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) passed in the Republican One Big Beautiful Bill Act and instead invest it in Nevada's local law enforcement programs, and help hire and train 200,000 local cops in communities across the U.S.

While federal law enforcement has an important role to play in targeting violent undocumented criminals and securing the border, the Trump Administration's immigration policies have led to the targeting of entire communities, including Americans, and are not keeping people safe. Instead, the dangerous Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, Kristi Noem, is putting thousands of unprepared and undertrained agents in our communities, creating chaos and fear through mass immigration raids. In the past year, ProPublica estimates that ICE has detained over 170 U.S. citizens. As of late November 2025, 73 percent of individuals held in ICE detention did not have a criminal conviction, and less than 5 percent had a violent criminal conviction. At the same time, ICE has lowered its training and hiring standards, putting undertrained and unvetted agents on the streets, straining already under-staffed police departments, and creating more distrust of local law enforcement.

"The Trump Administration's mass immigration enforcement is causing chaos and instilling fear in our communities because they are going after law-abiding immigrants and even U.S. citizens," said Senator Rosen. "We know that our local law enforcement officers make our communities safer, and we should give them every resource available to help them do that. I'll continue pushing the Trump Administration to fund hiring more police officers for Nevada."

Senator Rosen has fought to support Nevada's law enforcement officers and first responders. In 2024, Senator Rosen secured more than $7 million in funding for Nevada law enforcement, criminal justice, and public safety projects. Last Congress, Senator Rosen introduced bipartisan legislation to improve federal mental health support programs for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other emergency response personnel.
