City officials have received word that residents are receiving scam texts telling them that their property is about to be sold and to click a link in the text to stop it.
The City of Powder Springs will never notify residents that their property is being sold via text message. If your property is scheduled for sale, we will contact you via phone and certified mail. In addition, any property scheduled for auction must be advertised for four weeks in the Marietta Daily Journal prior to sale.
You can always check the payment status of your property online at https://cityofpowderspringsga.municipalonlinepayments.com/cityofpowderspringsga/tax/search.
As a general rule, it is unwise to click any link in an unsolicited text to avoid the potential of malware being downloaded onto your phone or other online device, or to be taken to any sites seeking your personal data for nefarious purposes. Scammers and other bad actors may send links within messages urging you to act quickly and/or claim that not doing so will result in a negative action. Similar scams may claim that you missed jury duty and must pay a fine to avoid arrest, or that you have unpaid tolls.
