A day of mourning for so many, Invasion Day marks the start of the invasion and colonisation of this country, the mass genocide of First Nations peoples, and the dispossession of cultural practices, language and Country.
Here's what happened around the country:
"It has been a really rough year for mob, post-referendum and in the lead up to the Federal election - where racism is seen as an election campaign strategy, and all the racists seem emboldened to proudly share their white supremist views. So it was really great to see so many allies out in the streets on Invasion Day, showing up in solidarity and support for First Nations communities right around the country.
With this uptick in racism though, we need to make sure that we continue to see active, ongoing support for Indigenous Rights from allies all throughout the year - particularly in regional areas where the councils and towns are quite conservative. It would be great to see allies stepping up and asking if their local councils are putting in as much effort to engage with First Nations residents in their towns as they put into organising their Australia Day BBQ's."
